Smart targets 5G capacity at Cloud 9 and Siargao’s transport hubs

Published November 6, 2026

A crowd of spectators can have a 5G signal and still put a mobile network under pressure when everyone tries to upload video from the same spot. That’s the capacity question behind Smart Communications’ latest network work in Siargao, where Cloud 9 in General Luna hosted the country’s first World Surf League Championship Tour stop.

Smart, the wireless subsidiary of PLDT Inc. and the event’s official telecommunications partner, says it is improving both coverage and capacity. The distinction is practical. Coverage determines where a device can connect. Capacity affects how much traffic the network can handle when athletes, production crews, journalists, creators and fans need it at once.

Where Smart is upgrading its network

The work builds on existing 5G service in General Luna, including Cloud 9, and at Siargao Airport and Siargao Seaport. Those locations serve different kinds of traffic: spectators sharing clips at the competition site, arriving passengers booking onward travel, and businesses handling customer inquiries and digital payments. Residents and people working remotely also use the network outside event hours.

The Philippines Pro had a competition window through November 10 and finished on November 3. “Our partnership with the WSL Championship Tour is another opportunity to help deliver meaningful digital experiences to athletes, visitors, and local communities as Siargao welcomes the global surfing community,” said Lloyd R. Manaloto, First Vice President and officer-in-charge of Smart.

Smart puts the Siargao work within its broader nationwide network investment and cites recognition from Ookla for Best Mobile Latency and Best Mobile Video Experience. The announcement gives no before-and-after measurements for Cloud 9, the airport or the seaport. How much faster a subscriber can upload a clip at each location remains an open question.

Data offers and smartwatch support

For subscribers using compatible devices, select Smart Unli 5G offers start at ₱90 for three days and include unlimited 5G data and non-stop 4G data. Smart also announced promotional freebies tied to select offers at designated Smart booths and partner stores in Siargao.

Postpaid subscribers have a separate option through plans that include Smart Device Link. A compatible smartwatch can share the subscriber’s primary number and mobile plan, allowing it to handle calls, texts and mobile data even when the paired iPhone is elsewhere.
