There’s nothing like boarding a plane feeling lighter — and now, that includes your travel tax refund.
On December 9 in Makati City, the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) inked a partnership with G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI) — the operator behind the country’s leading mobile wallet, GCash — to bring travel tax refunds straight to Filipino travelers’ phones.
This partnership marks a significant leap in speed, transparency, and convenience, eliminating long waits and replacing manual processing with real-time digital payouts.

From Counters to Clicks: Refunds Go Straight to GCash
Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), TIEZA is adopting GCash’s Funds Disbursement Service (FDS) — a secure system that allows approved travel tax refunds to be credited instantly to eligible passengers’ GCash wallets.
The shift isn’t just an upgrade — it fulfills national policy.
The move aligns with
📌 Executive Order No. 170, which requires the government to adopt digital payment systems, and
📌 Republic Act 9593 (Tourism Act of 2009), which gives TIEZA the authority to build systems and partnerships that improve its travel tax administration and refund services.
For travelers, that means no more on-site claiming, no more waiting for bank processing, and best of all — no fees for both TIEZA and its users.

As TIEZA Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid put it:
“This partnership underscores our commitment to building tourism together by elevating the quality and efficiency of every touchpoint in the Filipino travel experience.
By integrating sophisticated digital solutions like GCash, we are not simply streamlining the refund process—we are advancing transparency, reinforcing institutional accountability, and setting a higher benchmark for how government and industry can collaborate to meet the expectations of today’s discerning travelers.”

GCash Brings Its Digital Backbone to Government Services
With the agreement now in place, G-Xchange, Inc. will supply the secure infrastructure that makes instant refunds possible — including prefunding mechanisms and real-time reconciliation processes to safeguard public funds.
GCash Public Sector Head and Vice President Cleo Celeste C. Santos highlighted how the collaboration fits their mission:
“We are proud to support TIEZA in digitizing one of the most important touchpoints for travelers. Real-time refunds through GCash deliver unmatched convenience, speed, and reliability—empowering passengers with a truly modern and frictionless experience.”

She followed with a reminder that fintech evolution is as much about reach as it is about technology:
“This collaboration reinforces the mission of GCash to make digital financial services easily accessible for every Filipino. By embedding secure, seamless payouts into TIEZA’s processes, we are helping advance a more inclusive, responsive, and future-ready government service ecosystem.”
Travel Steps Forward — and So Does the System That Supports It
With outbound travel rebounding and domestic flights consistently full, consumer expectations have evolved too. Refund experiences that used to take weeks now happen in minutes — or even seconds — through an app most Filipinos already use.
And while the partnership sounds transactional on paper, it’s actually symbolic — a public-private collaboration rooted in governance, mobility, and traveler experience.

It’s an example of what digital government services should look like:
✔ seamless,
✔ transparent,
✔ secure, and
✔ centered on the people who use them.
